My opinion is that Zone blocking has it's place in mid-field - to stretch the field.
Personally I am a believer in the drive block - driving them off the ball.
You never use zone blocking on the goal line, there are certain techniques in the drive block to counter looping and veering.
You can also use "do-dad" blocking or combination blocking with the guy next to you.
I personally believe in drive blocking - some believe in zone blocking.
I guess there is more than one way to skin a cat.
To Woodysboys question
Usually the offensive coordinator is in thepress box, which does give you a view of the whole field and ability to see offensive and defensive plays as they form. It is a great place to call plays and/or communicate play calls to the Head Coach.
As a Head Coach, I would never leave the field to be up in the box. I think it is very important to maintain eye contact with your players. It gives you the ability to communicate the importance of the next series.
I believe the Head Coach is not only the offensive strategist, but must be the person to instill vim & vigor to the player, to lead and inspire, and to coach each player as much as possible during the game.
The Head Coach belongs on the field.
Don't Start the Tressel Bashing!
I guess it is to be expected - already bashing the coach! I understand the desire to win every game but you can't criticize Coach Tressel's record. The program has been successful, Coach has been to the BCS Championship game 3 times and won one of them. Only two other coaches have done that.
What alot of people are questioning is the offensive coordinator position and I will say.... I called all the plays in my 13 years of high school coaching and all the years as a college head coach, obviously with input from the assistants, but if I couldn't call the plays, I WOULD QUIT COACHIING.
It is unfair to compare the current coach to former coaches as well. Times have changed, as have the duties of a college coach now. I had to have tunnel vision on the game only to be successful. Now adays coaches are fundraisers, atheletic directors, public relations figure heads, etc.
Coach Tressel is doing a great job - he has a winning percentage against Michigan - which was what we all wanted. He won a national championship, something the previous two coaches didn't do. And he has a Strong Administration who is supporting him.
Let's refocus on winning the Big Ten - and GO BUCKS!!!
The Toughest Loss
Probably one of the toughest losses you can have is when you lose in the last couple of minutes!
After having a very good defensive game - unfortunately the Trojans were successful in the final minutes and put together a drive all the way down the field to win! And that is what a GREAT team can do.
OSU controlled the game in the early stages, holding USC to only 10 points, but was unable to capitalize on several prime opportunities to put the game out of reach.
The lack of ability to score when in the red zone, the lack of ability of the offense to make plays when needed and indecisiveness, causing delay of game penalties, all led to our demise.
And when a freshman USC quarterback comes into OUR stadium and outshines our own great quarterback, Terrell Pryor, things couldn't be worse!
There needs to be more emphasis put on Terrell and his passing - I see no improvement since last year in his passing ability. His release and technique really needs to improve if we are to be successful.
There was tremendous inconsistency in the offense. Having only 36 plays in 3 quarters simply is not enough!
As in the Notre Dame game this past Saturday - clock management killed us!
But the FANS - oh the FANS - How tremendous were our FANS!!! It was a very hard place to play on Saturday!
But it is time to pick ourselves up and move on the next opponent - Toledo.
I still don't understand scheduling University of Toledo to play anywhere except Ohio Stadium!
There can be great problems for both the program and the coach if any problems develop, i.e. A Loss!!!
Ohio State needs to wake up RIGHT NOW! Toledo has us in a good position if we don't snap back!
We can't rest on our laurels! This will be a tough game and we will need to have a GREAT GAME to win.
We need to get back up and continue forward on our quest for the Big Ten Championship!![]()
Louise - The Pryor eye black!!!
Louise asked for my opinion on Terrell Pryor honoring Michael Vick by having his name under his eye in the eye black.
Louise - I think it was a mistake! The only thing ANY football player should be focused on is the GAME! And all the energy, attention, and thought should go toward winning that GAME!
On the field, the GAME is your ONLY focus - and I guess, off the field it is up to you. If you want to think highly of someone who is of questionable character, and want to promote that, DO IT OFF THE FIELD!
The TEAM is more important than Mr. Vick - Remember that!
And if you noticed, he didn't have the name there this past Saturday!![]()
