It's The Big One....We've been waiting for!

osuvsuscIt's The Big One....We've been waiting for!

It's finally here - THE Big Game!

I like the "Big Game", and, normally that title would be reserved for Michigan - but this Saturday, Sept.12th, is officially the "Big Game" of the year for the Buckeyes! USC vs. OSU in the "shoe" - college football doesn't get better than this!

To win, as in every game, OSU will have to dominate the line of scrimmage, both on offense and defense. There can be NO missed tackles, hit them HARD and often, make great plays with interceptions, recovered fumbles, sacks and tackles for losses.  As always, we have to play hard every single play.  And special teams will be very important!  We need to block a kick and not allow any blocked kicks on our side.  Our punts and kicks need to pen them deep in their own territory.

Then there is the mental aspect of this game.  The coaches need to psych these kids up - make them believe they CAN!  Because, if you think you can.....you can.  If you think you CAN'T, you are probably right.  And I think the mental aspect of this game is critical.  We have such an advantage being in the "Shoe", our home turf - and at night!  Our fans need to become a part of this game!  We need the noise, we need the excitement, we need our fans to DO THE JOB!!!

It's Tuesday - I think Saturday against the Navy showed us all that we have a ways to go to improve to the level we are capable.  But we only have four more days to get there - this will be the biggest challenge of the season and it is upon us!  I challenge all of you to do your part - and the Team will do theirs.

Coach, excellent idea for the blog site, could you take a few moments and explain the advantages of the zone blocking scheme as compared to normal drive blocking??? I have my doubts about "zone" blocking in short yardage and goal-line situations.

Coach...............has Jim ever considered that maybe for a game or 2 he might serve his in game feel better by going up into the booth. Not as a permanent move, but one to help him gain somemore perspective on what's happening with defensive stunts and coverages. Maybe that would help him to be able to counter with some better adjustments to catch the defense and put them on their heels, rather than trying to force something they are obviously prepared to defend?

Thanks Coach.

Coach Bruce,I just wanted to say that Tressel Bashing has already started.Alot of fans dont agree on how Jim Tressel is coaching the Buckeyes.I mean, when you play a tough team like USC,as a coach (like Coach Tressel)Tressel, should not play safe and settle for a 3 point win.Tressel should be more aggressive and tougher on the team and not be weak. You sir were a very good coach from what I have read and yes, lets not forget Coach Woody Hayes-One of the finest coaches in NCAA Football.Coach Hayes was not afraid to show the players who was boss on the field and I think that if Tressel was more tough and aggressive like Coach Hayes and yourself, maybe he would possibly win more games. If we keep playing like we did against USC,pople will not only lose faith in Coach Tressel but, lose faith in the OSU Buckeyes Football Team.Thank You Coach Bruce-James Seletyn

The Toughest Conference

earle coachingWhat is the toughest conference?

No Question!

SEC logo
Everyone discusses what is actually the toughest conference in the nation - even some of the greatest football minds disagree - but most will say the SEC is far superior these days.
And I would tend to agree.  But I still have a few questions:

1) How many times do they play opponents out of the South?

2) How many times do they play opponents from the North IN the North, say, during the months of November, December and January - and do it OUTSIDE!

3) How often to they schedule a tough opponent from another conference like the Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pacific Coast Conference?  Or even Notre Dame?

And when you place the SEC as the #1 Toughest Conference, you then need to ask.....Who's second??

That is a difficult question because now you need to talk offense, defense, special teams, talent, toughness, ect.  And I would lump them all together as AVERAGE at best.

The SEC excells in TOUGHNESS and overall team SPEED.  Their big guys are exceptionally fast AND tough!

When you look at sacks, blocked kicks and interceptions - WATCH OUT!  They produce!  They make plays!  Enough said!

If not the SEC as #1 - make your case for any of the other conferences.

Or better yet - let's just catch up and surpass them this season!

New Season!  New Teams!  New Coaches!  New Schedules!  New Player!  New Challenges!

People couple the Florida and LSU NC games like bookends but the LSU game was much more competitive and we could have won that game. We made some bonehead mistakes but were not dominated like the Florida game. It was a 14 point game and LSU scored late.I agree that top to bottom that the SEC is currently the best overall conference but also believe that the best teams in the other conferences can compete with the best in the SEC any given year.

Everybody said that Miami was too fast for OSU in the 2002 NC game also. One thing that proved true was that it doesn't matter how fast you are if you cannot get going. Our defense in that game kept them bottled up very well most of the game. I believe that the speed difference was overstated anyway. Our defense was a fast as any I saw that year and Gamble and Jenkins didn't look out matched to me. Neither did Clarret when he chased Sean Taylor down from behind and ripped the ball from his hands. In the Florida NC game, on the opening kickoff, Ted Ginn looked like the fastest guy on the field. Too bad it was his only play in the game. Percy Harvin has wicked speed and there d-line definitely kicked out o-lines around but that was more than speed. I believe that game to have been a situation where Florida played their best game of the year the same night that OSU played their worse game of the year.

And if we are going back to 2006 then lets take a look at the Fiesta Bowl in which Boise St. beat an extremely favored Oklahoma team. Plus Utah boasted an undefeated season last year... Something NOONE in the SEC or Big 12 can say they did

I hope you are joking... The Mountain West already competed with (and beat) the SEC. just look at last years Sugar Bowl! Utah dominated the ENTIRE game against Alabama! btw im not trying to say the Big Ten can compete with the SEC, only the MWC/WAC Super conference haha

You are crazy! They still couldn't compete with the SEC! The other conferences just don't have the speed - as evidenced by OSU vs. Florida in the National Championship game in 2006. No one thought Florida had a chance and their speed just killed OSU!

If the Mountain West took Hawaii, Boise St and Fresno St from the WAC and added them in with Utah, BYU, and TCU; that would be by far the toughest conference

Here We Go! It's almost here!

Hi Buckeye Fans!

The most exciting time of the year is just around the corner - Football Season, Big Ten Football & The Buckeye Football Season!  Every season is a little different than all the other seasons.  But these essentials must be in place for success:  Great Coaching, Great leadership by the coaching staff and the seniors on the team. Underclassmen can step to the forefront in many positions to help insure success, especially the Quarterback position.  But, Great leadership is necessary for great success.  Whatever sacrifice it takes to win must be made by one and all.

Some say talented football players are the main ingredient for success, and, it is important, but it is not the most important ingredient.  I think toughness, mental and physical toughness are very important to success.  Knocking the CRAP out ot the other team on offense and defense and special teams for 60 minutes will determine the outcome of the game.  Toughness on the offensive line and a dominance of the line of scrimmage for running the ball for 300 yards per game, could almost assure a victory.

No fumbles, interceptions or bad plays on the part of the players can also secure victory.

I always loved to coach a hard working football team that loved to play football.  They made football fun!  What is fun - fun is winning.  And if you work hard in practice it is always reflected in the game.

Team is the name of the game!  Individuals don't count!  Eleven is better than one, 100 is better than one!  When you win as a team it is really a rewarding experience!  And in a big game - Michigan, USC, Penn State, etc., it normally takes a great team effort.  Everyone must contribute to the success achieved in the Big Game!

Log on with your comments and suggestions for topics you'd like to discuss here and I will respond to as much as I can.
